Want homestyle Italian cooking?
Picture it…You step into a traditional trattoria in the heart of Sicily. Three generations of the old country welcome you with open arms. You're instantly seduced by aromas of all-day home cooking. You feel as if you've just gotten a great big hug, and even if you're not of Italian or Sicilian descent, you have the sense that you've just "come home."
In a space that adjoins the Cannistraro's On the Green Salon & Day Spa, barrel-tiled interior roofs grace stone tile floors serving up a nostalgic vignette of Old Sicily—like a building within a building. Glass cases of fresh deli meats, cheeses, baked goods, and other succulents will greet customers throughout the day. An open kitchen will invite diners to witness the talents of the chef and cooks.
The inspiration for The Green Room came in the form of a dream from Mary Rose Cannistraro's Grandmother (also named Mary Rose). As a child, namesake Mary Rose would help in Nana LaCava's restaurant. She learned the old ways of preparing delicious meals for family and friends, then was fortunate enough to marry a man who is a virtuoso of homestyle Italian cooking. Many local residents will remember Bob Cannistraro's award-winning lasagna that disappeared as fast as it was set out at Taste of Camden 2011. The On The Green exhibit won the "Best All Around" Award for their 65 lbs. of lasagna, 500 meatballs, 300 Sicilian stuffed peppers, and 300 cannollis that were all prepared in their test kitchen in their home.
The Green Room serves up all the family favorites including Paninis, Chicken and Eggplant Parm, Sicilian pizzas, Bob's Famous Meatballs and Lasagna, and other traditional fare to be accompanied by wine or beer and of course Italian coffees including espresso and cappuccino.
Downstairs, customers can dine inside or outside on the front patio. The upstairs loft is being transformed into a cozy living room setting complete with comfy sofas and an inviting fireplace. Diners can also enjoy the exhilarating views of emerald green fairways and Hole #5 on Osprey Cove's renowned golf course either through the French doors or at tables on the second story deck.
The beauty of this authentic Sicilian café is that it gave the Cannistraro's an opportunity to expand the space of their On the Green Salon & Day Spa. To the rear of the café, couples can occupy their own suite for spa services. On the Green's menu of services will be expanding as well with creative features spa services, a great mini break from the weekday office routine.
If you have Sicilian or Italian blood in you, you already know what it's like to be lovingly catered to by a family. If not, you're in for a real treat. Bob and Mary Rose Cannistraro and family are opening their arms and their hearts to residents and visitors, inviting one and all to experience a little slice of Sicily right here in Camden County.
